Crown Point Junior Music Academy

Monday Morning Memo

Week of 1/27-1/31

I appreciate the language and clarity when you are teaching your students.  I also see and hear teachers in their instruction (based on their deliberate planning) shifting the work onto the students and "not letting them off the hook" when attempting to connect their work to the success criteria and the learning intentions.  As you consider shifting more of the work onto the student and their metacognition (thinking about their own thinking), there will need to be some productive struggle that you allow for when they are working collaboratively.  Keep pushing your kids with that right amount of push!  If you don't try to have students connect their work to the learning intentions and success criteria, you will never know.

Strategic Focus of School:
Safe, Inclusive, Collaborative Culture
Teacher Clarity
Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum

Scheduled Observations:

The scheduled observations will be based on our strategic focus areas below. Currently, I have the scheduled dates of Monday, 2/24/20, Thursday, 2/27/20, and Friday, 2//28/20. I will be getting a sign-up sheet out soon.

Data Meetings

I will be scheduling data meetings with each one of you between now and the end of February.  For this please be cognizant of collecting samples of your student work.  You will have an opportunity to share your lessons, the learning intentions and success criteria, and the student work that aligns with the learning intention and success criteria.  More information and dates to come!

During the observations, I will be coming in the lens of the ideal state of teacher clarity which we have been working on all year.  My focus will not be on what the teacher does, but what the students are doing and their overall engagement based on the definition of the ideal state of teacher clarity below.

IDEAL STATE OF TEACHER CLARITY

1.   Students will be able to communicate (verbally, written,
demonstrate…) to you/others the learning intention

2.    Students will be able to communicate to you/others what it takes to be successful in their work

3.    Students will be able to connect the work to the learning intentions and success criteria

4.    Students will be able to self-reflect and self-assess how they performed in the task and what they learned and communicate to you and others.

Kindness Challenge:
We will be part of the Kindness Challenge next week and we are asking teachers to help advertise the events and have some discussions of what kindness can look like, feel like and sound like at home or at school.

Also during the week, there will be an activity every day during recess and lunch recess.  Kari Robinson and Josh Wandro (MFLAC) Details will be communicated throughout the week.

Monday Morning Memo

Week of 1/21-1/24

When walking through classrooms, I can see and hear your shift to a focus on Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.  Teachers have been clear on what kids are learning and what they need to do to be successful.  Currently, the change that many teachers are moving towards is the shifting of the work onto the other students.  If we want students to be able to communicate what they are learning and how they are successful, then the planning for lessons will need to be explicitly purposeful as you direct students to have those discussions.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your critical thinking as you plan for enhancing your own Teacher Clarity.

Thank you to to all that helped out in the Health Fair Expo and a special shout-out to Cathy for organizing the event!

CPJMA representing at NAMM this past weekend.  If you are ever interested in attending, please let Cathy or me know.

Data Meetings/Formal Observations:
I will be scheduling data meetings with each one of you between now and February.  For this please be cognizant of collecting work samples in a portfolio of your student work.  You will have an opportunity to share your lessons, their learning intentions and success criteria, and the student work that aligns with the learning intention and success critieria.  More information to come!
